BSI announced as an accredited AI management system certification body

9 December 2024 —BSI has been officially recognized by Raad voor Accreditatie (RvA) as an accredited certification body for the international standard on AI management systems, ISO/IEC 42001, as part of its ongoing commitment to building trust in AI.

As an accredited certification body, the business services and improvement company will provide certification services to ISO/IEC 42001, enabling organizations to benefit from BSI’s extensive expertise and robust certification process, ensuring their AI systems are developed and deployed in accordance with best practices and international standards around AI governance, risk management, and ethical considerations.

It follows the publication nearly a year ago of the standard, which BSI announced along with plans for comprehensive training and certification services. Last month KPMG Australia became the first organisation globally to achieve ISO 42001 (AI) certification by BSI. In the long term, certification will be a way for businesses to build trust, enhance transparency, and drive innovation in their AI initiatives.

Recognition as an accredited AI Management System Certification Body cements BSI’s commitment to advancing the development, implementation, and regulation of AI, and ensuring its alignment with globally recognized standards for safety, reliability, and ethical practices.

ISO 42001 Artificial Intelligence Management System Implementation sets the international benchmark for AI management systems, establishing a comprehensive framework for organizations to manage AI technologies responsibly and effectively.

Dr Michael Weissig, AI Regulatory Services Managing Director at BSI said BSI believes that AI has immense potential to drive positive change across society, both now and in the future. However, a gap in trust remains. Establishing the guardrails to ensure AI is developed and used ethically and responsibly is essential to bridging the divide.

“Achieving accredited status reflects BSI’s dedication to supporting organizations in navigating the complexities of AI technology, while upholding rigorous standards of quality and integrity. BSI’s role as a certification body demonstrates our commitment to promoting excellence in AI and marks a significant milestone in the journey towards responsible and sustainable AI innovation. We look forward to playing a crucial part in fostering a responsible AI ecosystem that prioritizes safety, transparency, and ethical practices.”
